ISO 10816 — Mechanical Vibration Standard
ISO 10816 Overview
ISO 10816 is the predecessor to ISO 20816, still widely referenced. It defines procedures for evaluating vibration of machines by measurements on the non-rotating parts (bearing housings).
Parts:
• ISO 10816-1: General guidelines and definitions
• ISO 10816-2: Steam turbines >50 MW
• ISO 10816-3: Industrial machines 15-300 kW (most commonly cited)
• ISO 10816-4: Gas turbines
• ISO 10816-5: Hydraulic machines
• ISO 10816-6: Reciprocating machines
• ISO 10816-7: Rotodynamic pumps
Zone Boundaries (ISO 10816-3, Group 1, rigid mounting, simplified):
• Zone A/B boundary: 2.3 mm/s RMS
• Zone B/C boundary: 4.5 mm/s RMS
• Zone C/D boundary: 7.1 mm/s RMS
Key Differences from ISO 20816:
• ISO 20816 provides more updated guidance
• ISO 20816-3 replaces ISO 10816-3 for industrial machines
• Zone boundary values may differ between parts and machine groups
Important: ISO 10816 has been superseded by ISO 20816 for most machine types. However, many industries and CMMs still reference ISO 10816 values. Always clarify which standard and which part applies to your machine.
